JACK SURES_a sensual touch / une sensualité tactile

Filmmaker Linda Corbett presents the magnificent mural works of internationally renowned Canadian artist, Jack Sures. As she examines his murals for the Sturdy-Stone Centre, the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the Mino ‘89 / International Ceramics Competition and other locations we grow to appreciate how Jack Sures’ art engages us outside the gallery in an art experience that celebrates the tactile connections to nature in our everyday lives.

The film is part of a touring retrospective exhibition titled, Tactile Desires: The Work of Jack Sures organized by the MacKenzie Art Gallery and the Tom Thomson Art Gallery. The entire project was been made possible in part through a contribution from the Museums Assistance Program, Department of Canadian Heritage.

FAFARD: Field Horse / Cheval de trait

The earthwork Field Horse stood 1,920 feet by 1,100 feet, 2700 hands high. Drawn on a canvas of winter wheat, canola, alfalfa, soybeans and corn - a mercurial artwork shaped by nature and by a community of artists and farmers. The fleeting image of this massive horse photographed by pilot Bob Douglas every week for over a year, mingled with stories from artist Joe Fafard and project coordinator Roy Hickling have finally found permanent form in this short documentary.

FIERCE EXPRESSION : the work of Tony Calzetta

presents the wildly original work of artist Tony Calzetta. Studio sequences with Calzetta painting and working with master printmaker Dieter Grund engage the viewer in the process of making art. In a series of candid interviews, Tony discusses how the struggle to be true to yourself in art and in life is at the core of his darky humourous aesthetic. An original music score drives the lively visual mélange including animations of Tony’s titillating titles, scores of paintings and drawings, insights from curators, art critics and fans, and archival photographs of the Bloor Street Diner project.

WHITE BALANCE : the work of Ronald Bloore

explores the inspiration, vision, and commitment of Ronald Bloore, the “simple painter” whose work helps define the history of modern art in Canada. A passionate commitment to painting so intense that in a moment of revelation he destroyed all his work and defiantly began to paint using only a palette of white. A boy who ran off to “join-up” at seventeen, a professor of Art and Archeology with two honorary degrees and an Order of Canada, a gallery director who mounted one of the most scandalous art exhibitions in Canadian history, and an artist who first found fame as part of the “Regina Five”.

“It’s a three letter word, is all I can say about art!”
- Ron Bloore
